Comments: Hooligan is a poor hobo who tries to do right but just gets in trouble. Gloomy Gus always seems to benefit some how from his troubles.
The art has a funny stle to it. Happy Hooligan is a clowish looking character and he acts that way to.
These stories take place over a ten year period, from 1903 to 1913.
Happy Hooligan is a very likable character. You will fall in love with him and route for him even though you know he'll get it in the end. All the characters have an appeal that will keep your interest even though the stories do tend to be repetative. They change just enough each strip to hold your attention.
The Hooligan brothers get to travel as well. Each country though the same shenanigans are going on. Happy always finds trouble or it just follows him around.
The nostalgic use of words that are no longer used is fun and easy to read. It is full of wonderful drawings and characters to delight anyone and everyone. This is a wonderful collection of newspaper strips that you will not want to miss.

Comments: The birth of the motion picture industry is explained in some detail with mention of the major people involved.
This murder mystery is based on real life. Director William Desmond Taylor is found dead. His death is handled in a completely ameteur way. People come and go as they please on the crime scene the police don't seem to care.
The art is black and white and filled with detail. All the people are drawn with distinct facial features.
The story flows along nicely. It is all in narrative form and gives a easy to follow accounting of the people around William at the time of his death. His life was a strange one. He wondered around a lot in his youth. Plus he had so many secrets its a wonder if the investigation into his death even revealed half of them. The list of suspects with a motive to kill him is a very long one indead.
Hollywood grew from a quiet retirement community into a place of scandalous activities, mystery and tragedy. All of those are shown here and brought to life by Rick Geary. He knows how to tell and show a tale that will captivate your interest.
