Posted - 02/28/2010 : 10:42:43 AM George Martzoukos Artist for Aposperos: Merchant Of Souls Published by: Visionary Comics Interviewed by: Richard Vasseur Posted: 02/28/2010
Rich: How do you portray Aposperos's character?
George: I have worked on many different facial expressions of aposperos; for example you will notice that the faces are kinda different from panel to panel although you know that it is the same Character; Due to the mood, his face is getting more apocalyptic, more demonic according to the script.
Rich: Do you get to draw the Devil in this comic?
George: In a sense yes, perhaps as a more general demonic energy being that occupies different incarnated forms, in this way, you can say that the "devil" will be and is portrayed within the comic.
Rich: Do you draw people with a realistic look?
George: Yes, but I decided that i would emphasize on the psychological aspects of the characters on aposperus and skip the use of a matt, digital painting style. For traditional painting there was no time for what we are doing in aposperus.
Rich: How do you portray a soul?
George: A soul is being portrayed first of all when it's energy has been captured, as trapped within a jar which is aposperus’ collector. Souls are also depicted in various other ways, as etheric bodies and lucid energies.
Rich: What are the Borderlands and the Invisible World and how do you illustrate them?
George: There are some points where the scenery shifts and there is an unseen world that aposperus is overwhelmed by in his human persona based sense; as his greater part of what he is, is a different story. So you will see everything turning into something familiar yet out of this world. The colors are more vivid there, the relationship between color and materials of buildings or beings is more fluid. And I would say that it is shocking as you don't know what to expect.
Rich: What is "Profitis" the graphic novelette about?
George: Profitis is a graphic novel about the world falling under a mysterious chaos, where our hero few hundreds of years later is being developed in a laboratory so as to find the keys for what happened. His dna is a key to this disaster and there are much more elements in the world than what there appears to be on the surface of it. A 6 page short story based on "profitis" has been published from "visionary comics" under the title "An Eden in Hell" and was written by Nektarios Chryssos.
Rich: Which other artists do you admire?
George: For different reasons different artists, i will just name a few. Alex Ross, Ashley Wood, Clint langley, Dave Mckean, Simon Bisley, liam Sharp, regarding comics.
Rich: Where and how did you learn to draw?
George: I am self-taught, i was in awe when i firstly saw few of Luis Royo's classic pieces i would say and i came to realise that there was so much more potential in Art beyond the known art history that i had been taught through history books in school and the media involved in political, sociological, ethnological or even scientific aspects of society that are utilizing art for those purposes. I found out this other world of solid Art and so i tried to draw (as i always had been anyway since i was 2) but by being focused on texturing and values etc. and I became passionate about it.
Rich: Why do you like drawing?
George: I love the technical procedure involving mastery over visualization through painting or sketching. It is an amazing science that goes much further than simple representations that are based on what is commonly physically seen by everyone more or less, on how everyone sees. There are many more levels if you take in consideration the human body's energy, the states of energy in our brain. Beyond that i just love science fiction and fantasy and cannot live without color and texture; Without powerful representations of other worlds and I extremely love what we’re doing in Aposperos. It’s fascinating.
Rich: Would you like to work on a superhero comic?
George: Yes of course but it would have to be in the same style as Aposperus.
Rich: What comics did you read as a child and do you now?
George: I was reading the typical x-men, spiderman comic books and later on i discovered Spawn. From spawn and afterwards for a short time i was reading everything so as to take more peaks in what is commonly accepted as artwork in the industry. From spawn i also discovered hellspawn and although i now love all kinds of comics really, i only read stuff that have the greatest amount of work in them technically and that tend towards fine art.
Rich: Who has supported your comics career the most?
George: The guys in visionary comics have showed great interest in my work and i thank them a lot for this.
Rich: How can someone contact you?
George: Through my myspace page ( www.myspace.com/martzoukos ) or mail george_martzoukos@yahoo.com
Rich: Any final words of wisdom?
George: It was nice to share this interview with all of you. Thank you for your time
