Posted - 03/08/2010 : 10:59:43 PM Hi Paul!
Silkia Aponte - a paranormal experiencer.
I'm feeling back to my old self today and able to write a little easier. YAY!!
I also have a new Laptop, my computer was acting up again.
Now on to the rest of the research.
The home at 2552 Golden Eagle Dr is fairly new. And as you know I looked at the previous owners and found no "George" or anything out of the ordinary.
Having said that I did notice the home is near Gold Bug Park where some of the old mining tunnels are located.
Placerville is known to be a Ghost Town, no pun intended. :)
In it's early history the town was known as "Ravine City" and "Blood and Guts", soon it became "Old Dry Diggings" because the "dry diggings" had to be carried down to the water to flush the gold out.
After the discovery of gold the place became a very crowded cultural melting pot. Americans, Mexicans, Frenchmen, Chinese laborers, etc.....all worked side by side. BTW, there are many mysterious walls referred to as "China walls" in that area as well that appear to be even older than the settlement.
The gold discovery also attracted roving bands of thieves and murderers, of which there were many. It soon became known as Hangtown after the lynching of several men. Lots of men were hung on that infamous spot. Groups of criminals would stake out areas and mark their victims for robbery and/or murder. In an old archive that first particular group of men was referred to as "Owls", the name of their "organization". They had marked a Frenchman.
It was a wild place, there are also records of women being murdered as well.
Some of the town's religious leaders along with a few civic group were not too happy about being known as "Hangtown", it created an image that was "unfriendly". LOL So they pressed to have the town's name changed and it was Incorporated in 1854, becoming Placerville. And later the county seat of El Dorado.
The town was previously destroyed by fire and many lost their life savings. Between 1856 and 1864 there was a total of 5 major fires. In 1910 the Courthouse was rebuilt, having burned down prior to that in a terrible fire in which many records were permanently lost.
A lot of the history was preserved in a book written in 1883 on the History of El Dorado County which has been provided on-line available here: WESTERN LIVING CENTER
See this link for the history of Placerville: PLACERVILLE (HANGTOWN, RAVINE CITY)
I am not surprised by the activity taking place there. It would be hard to find an area that was not rumored to be haunted. And the address given is very close to the old park.
The history is amazing and sad when you realize the hardships others had to endure. Pioneers came there from all over the country. The trail was littered with dead horses and abandoned wagons. On the way to there some families became stranded in the snow and starved to death, there are reports that when a few were rescued it was discovered that they had resorted to cannibalizing their dead just to stay alive.
If anyone is interested in more of the county's history this is a good link for quaint and unusual stories: STORIES IN EL DORADO COUNTY
