Posted - 01/17/2010 : 06:21:21 AM Chris Buchner Co-Writer for Hell's Blood Published by: Guild Works Publications Interviewed by: Richard Vasseur Posted: 01/17/2010
Rich: What is the plot of "Hell's Blood"?
Chris: Hell's Blood is about the eternal struggle of good and evil. The demon Burucu is seeking out these mystic gems in order to use their collective power and take over the mortal world. However, the higher powers of good have their own agents to stand in his way in the form of Meltdown, Ota and Zandra.
Rich: Do you feel the art compliments your writing skills?
Chris: The art is off the chain! I think, for the book as a whole, the art works just fine.
Rich: How do you and Liam Webb work co-writing?
Chris: Funny story here. When Hector Rodriguez was looking for someone to take over for writer Scott Sheaffer, he had me, Liam and one other writer all submit our own takes on #2 after getting to preview #1's script.
As it turns out, me and Liam ended up doing almost the exact same things. The similarities were very scary. So, Hector picked and chose what he liked out of both and mashed them together, which were most of the character interaction scenes. The only thing entirely from my script were the action sequences. Hector really liked the choreography I threw into that, which is a benefit of having a background in martial arts.
Given how well that worked out, we decided to try and have lightning strike twice. I would write my script, Liam would write his, Hector would pick and choose what of which he liked best, and we'd throw them all together. Probably not the most efficient way to do a collaboration, but whatever works, right?
Rich: Would you like to see this comic in color?
Chris: We actually do have plans to eventually colorize the book, and I think that will add a whole new dimension to the art. But, this book has the added benefit of working great in black and white for the subject matter and overall tone. So, even if it never does get colored, it's really not that big a loss.
Rich: Who are the main characters and what are they like?
Chris: Hector is Meltdown, basically the keeper of the cosmic balance of good and evil. He was just a young boy until his world came crashing down and he learned that his entire life, until now, had been one big lie. He has all this overwhelming power and responsibility, but neither the composure, mind or desire to deal with it. And you thought puberty was bad!
Zandra is a warrior for the side of good. She's a kick-ass-first-and-ask-questions-never kind of gal. As a result, she's balanced out by Ota who is the more rational of the pair. Together, they're tasked with helping The Balance achieve control over his abilities and form him into the being that will save the world from Burucu and other forces of evil.
Rich: What type of villains will we see?
Chris: We have some plans for the next few issues of the book and have discussed some villains. Basically, you can expect us to up the ante. We're raising the bar with Burucu in #3 & 4, and then we're gonna blow the bar into outer space once the next arc begins. That's about all I can reveal at this time. If you wanna know more, I strongly suggest picking up the books! You won't be sorry.
Rich: Would you like to do more work at Marvel?
Chris: It's always been my dream to work for Marvel, and there are a ton of characters I'd love to work on. I'd especially like the chance to give new life to some old, forgotten characters in mini-series form. Particularly Ben Reilly, the Spider-Man clone, who I was going to use in my Epic submission before Marvel killed the line in 2003. But, if the Index is as far as I go under their banner, I'm grateful to have at least had that experience.
Rich: Was working on the "Official Index to the Marvel Universe Vol 1" a challenge?
Chris: There were aspects of it that were. The hardest part for me was doing the character chronologies. All the books we covered are ongoing, and with event after event Marvel characters are appearing all over the place. As a result, the chronologies became more fluid and new flashbacks and retcons gave us errata for previously published issues (to be fixed when the books get collected).
The original Indexes gave us a huge head-start for the periods they covered and we had access to plenty of resources up until about the 2004 books, at which point we were completely on our own. Major props go to Daron Jensen and Jeph York for their tireless efforts at building up our modern-day chronologies. And props to the entire Index team; a bunch of seriously dedicated guys who worked hard to give the best they could.
In the end, I think we managed to churn out a pretty satisfying product and hopefully the fans both enjoy them and find them useful.
Rich: What is after "Hell's Blood" for you?
Chris: Well, there really isn't an AFTER. We're hoping to continue Hell's Blood for a while through both print and online content. Now, DURING Hell's Blood, there's quite a few things going on.
Since you guys last talked to me about Iconic 1, I've become the head of publications for the Comicbook Artists Guild and am producing several books for the group; including our first prose anthology, World's Beyond, and Iconic 2. I've also been named Editor-in-chief of Guild Works Publications and am overseeing one of our other two upcoming books, Worst Case Scenario.
Then, of course, is Marvel Index vol. 2 and hopefully some of my own projects in the very near future. In particular, making comics for a younger demographic to help boost the industry's reader numbers.
Rich: How did you get the nickname Wolverine?
Chris: In some instances, it was because I loved the character, especially from the Chris Claremont and Larry Hama days.
Rich: Would you like to have the abilities of some of the characters in "Hell's Blood"?
Chris: I kinda like Meltdown's ability to shape-shift his body into weapons. Lethal AND convenient!
Rich: How do you spend your time when your not writing?
Chris: Easy...I edit! With several books I'm involved in currently in various stages of creation, I have a lot of content to look through, E-Mails to send, assorted things like that. Free time doesn't come around often, but in the moments when I'm not really being productive I try to get in a video game or a bike ride.
Rich: How can someone contact you?
Chris: People can E-Mail me at atomic_comics@hotmail.com 24/7. I'm also on Comicspace at comicspace.com/atomicmedia.
Rich: Any words for your fans?
Chris: I have fans? Well, if they're my fans specifically or not, I just wanna say thanks for picking up anything I've had a part in making and hopefully you were satisfied enough to come back for more.
