Justin Leach Creator/Writer/Artist for Majestic XII Published by: Odyssey Comics Interviewed by: Richard Vasseur Posted: 01/07/2010
Rich: Where did the idea for all these superheroes and villians come from?
Justin: Basically, the ideas for these characters came from years of reading comics from when I was a kid. I used to sit for hours either reading comics or designing super-heroes. The villainous group "Legend Killers" came from the idea of them being a rogues gallery of my leading character LEGEND. So I had the concept that they would be analogues of all of my favourite classic comic villains. Rich: How do you match a name with a power for the characters?
Justin: A lot of people have trouble coming up with names. I tend to love the Chris Claremont code name style of names that started with the X-Men. I often create the design, match a power and then a name that fits the power. Sometimes it all just comes together like someone has handed it to me and says here "ya go."
Rich: Do you have a favorite superhero from those you created?
Justin: Actually, I love them all. However, LEGEND is my favourite. He seems to be a fan favourite of almost everyone who reads the comic. It is almost like love at first sight.
Rich: What is the storyline of "Majestic XII"?
Justin: Majestic-XII is about a super-human military force created by the U.S. Government in the 1940's. They are put together to protect Earth from the advances of alien forces and to keep the knowledge of alien life from the public. The story picks up when the leading character LEGEND returns from years of retirement to find that the war had not gone well and that his team has almost all been replaced by super-felons.
Rich: Can you describe the team leader?
Justin: The leader's name is LEGEND, an ageless character who has a pure 1940's personality caught up in the wild times of the modern world. He must deal with the crumbling of the team and all of the things that have gone wrong with the human/alien war since his departure.
Rich: Who are some of the supporting cast?
Justin: The supporting cast are as of now, General Graves who oversees the MJ-XII project. Soon President Obama will also become a member of the supporting cast as of issue 2.
Rich: Do you have more ideas for more super beings for this comic?
Justin: I have a lot ideas for characters. The next character to be revealed in issue 2 is a 7 foot tall Indestructible mercenary named Scrimshaw who has been hunting my main character LEGEND for centuries and they have a real explosive battle sequance that goes through issue 2.
Rich: What would you change about "Majestic XII" if you could?
Justin: I would change nothing about the concept or the team. In regards to the book. I would have spread it over two books and tried to do a little more character developement.
Rich: Any ideas for other comics?
Justin: Well, I do,but my main focus is on this comic.
Rich: Why are you associated with Susan Soares?
Justin: I had seen her online, that she was a promotions manager for comics, and I was interested in seeing what she could do for my comic. I am very pleased at the work she has done for our title so far.
Rich: What are your future plans careerwise?
Justin: My goal is to take this comic as far as I can. I am very excited about the characters and concepts. Also I am very honored to have such incredible talents as Andrew Kilian as my artist and Omi Remalante as my colorist.
Rich: If you could have one super power what would it be and why?
Justin: Teleportation. I have not vistied a large amount of places and I would love to be able to just blink and be on the other side of the world.
Rich: How can someone contact you?
Justin: They can contact me through my e-mail @ monkeybusiness2k@gmail.com
Rich: Any final words of wisdom?
Justin: If anyone starts a comic they should know that the managing of the comic is actually the second job. The leadership of the team is the first. Also bring lots of money.
