Message from the President Paul’s Incoherent Ramblings Jazma Universe Online! http://www.jazmaonline.com/ July 10, 2010 Vol 14 #124 Contributions by: Jeani Rector, Critter News, William Carlisle Next Issue: August 15, 2010, Vol. 14 #125
THE PLAYGROUND MOTHER
So there I was, dressed in black from head to toe on a hot summer day, attempting unsuccessfully to concentrate both on the book I'd brought along to read and my small daughter across the playground from my own shady bench, when across the grassy stretch to my right I observed a young woman, spotlessly attired in white sweatshirt and white jeans, approaching our vicinity with her own small daughter in tow. I say she was young because although the shading of her skin (and even of her cleaner-than-clean white clothing) had to it an ashy gray pallor, her face was that of a seventeen-year-old beauty queen ~ yet I marveled throughout her entire visit to us in that park at the expression it bore, which was that of the most ancient, sorrowful yet at the same time wise, exalted ~ benign ~ serene. It seemed to me that it would have taken a much longer life than she appeared to have had to earn the sweet sorrow upon her visage. . Her little girl raced off toward the slides and swings, while her mother sat down on the bench to my right. 'She'll regret the effect of that bench on her white clothing when she gets up,' I thought automatically. Every few moments I would glance up in order to view again the expression on that face ~ something like I imagined would be upon the face of Mother Mary were she to manifest on a playground bench in a sweatshirt and jeans. I marveled that each time I glanced up I found her also glancing up at me! When our eyes met, it filled me with the sweetest of energy, flowing between us and building in my heart. We never said one single word to one another, though we were separated only by the length of two park benches. But we must have repeated this empathic gazing four or five times as our children played together with ~ now that I think of it, considering my little tomboy was involved ~ unusual quietness and harmony. What passed between the two of us in those long glances truly communicated more than words ever could have; more than enough to fill our souls with a mysterious sense of companionship and comfort. At last she summoned her child and, rising from the bench (with, I noticed, not one spot or twig upon her attire) moved back along the pathway leading to the grassy stretch she had come in by. Even as she walked upon this path, twice more, we gazed our fill at one another. Then she and her daughter disappeared around the corner of a building. Just as they did so, church bells began to peal joyously nearby. A grand wedding procession, beribboned and belled, swept toward me around the corner of that same building. For a long time afterward I remained confused about one thing: If that wonderful young woman had been a ghost from times past as everything else about her made her appear indeed to be, then why had she been dressed in such modern clothing? As so often occurs with we seekers the answer came to me when least expected, and from a source which, in order to connect with, one must have trodden far paths with true and earnest humility. In this particular case I was sharing some tobacco with a ragged gentleman outside of the cross-country bus station in (I think) Seattle. "You know, some of the ghosts I've seen," he offered in the flow of our general conversation, "They update their wardrobes, have you noticed that?"
