Comments: London 1834 is where this story takes place.
The art is rather plain looking. It is almost cartoonish. Plus it simple and lacking detail.
This take on the Oliver Twist is done a little differently.
Jack Dawkins or the Artful Dodger is our star and he is a spirited character.
The Dodger and the girl he saves are both looking good illustrated for the time period. The characters in the comic are written talking in the language style of the time. It is fun to read the language and imagine them actually speaking that way.
Dodger is a street kid who does what he has to to survive. He also cares about others and is willing to help. So he has a big heart.

Comments: The artwork is lacking detail. It is not focused.
Doctor Van Helsing a vampire hunter is shown and he comes across as a lame hero for fighting vampires. The vampires themselves to not seem frightening at all.
The Artful Dodger has a unique way of fighting vampires to say the least. You will have to see it for yourselves.
Abraham Van Helsing is on the run from the vampires and he is helped by the Artful Dodger and a woman.
Carfax Abby is a nice imposing place. It would look better more defined in the illustrations.
That woman turns out to be a Princess.
So the story seems to be about Van Helsing, Dodger and the Princess fighting these vampires. What do the vampires want? That is a mystery.
The ending just ends in mid story. No warning it just stops.
The three main characters all have potential and hopefully in future issues we will see it come out.

Title: Peter David's Artful # 3

Artwork by: Laura Neubert
Colors by: Laur Rea
Letters: Justin Birch
Price: $ 3.99 US
Rating: 2 out of 5 stars

Comments: The art is plain and the characters faces need more focused expressions. The bodies could use more distinction to them. The vampires are not at all scary.
The Dodger and his friend are off to rescue the Princess. No Princess in this issue though. Dodger and friend get to fight a vampire.
There is a little excitement with the vampires. Nothing overly important happens.
Oliver Twist makes an appearance but is not used in the story.
Dodger now seems like he could be a great character he just needs to be handled better.

Title: Peter David's Artful # 4

Comments: The art is basic with not much about it to make it stand out.
Dodger and friend are visiting an insane asylum. There they rescue a Princess and they find something unexpected.
The vampires within these pages are not scary ones. Neither the art nor the writing will frighten you.
The art is done so wishy washy. Vampires should be scary creatures of the night.
Dodger and his friend just seem like two kids running around town. The brief fight they get into has very little to it and the poses do not stand out at all.
The Artful Dodger meets vampires is not as good as you might think it would be.

Comments: The art needs to be more focused.
We see a vampire attack go wrong but are left wondering why it did. Plus there is no fear instilled from this vampire or the fact it is attacking a human.
Dawkins aka the Artful Dodger and Bram hatch a plan to kill Mr. Fang. The plan well does not quite work as planned. The scenes seem as if they should be exciting or funny but are neither.
Hawkins is illustrated in one panel with hatred filling him. The close up of his face is well done. Fagin in one panel as well done closer up is illustrated nicely to show his vampiric side. For the most part though the art is not done clearly enough.
Mr. Fang invades Buckingham Palace. What is his plan? The Artful Dodger doges his way into the palace to stop him though. Can he stop Mr. Fang? Tune in next issue to find out?

Comments: The art is pasty and unfocused.
A vampire is inside Buckingham Palace. He is after the Princess. The Artful Dodger is after him. The Princess Alexandrina Victoria is a vampire as well. This point should have had more impact on the story.
The vampires are rarely shown. The battle with them is so short if you blink you will miss it. Plus it is not illustrated to catch your attention. More action and excitement was needed.
Dodger gets the chance to improve his situation in life. He makes what he thinks is the decision.
The ending offers a few twists to the story that are surprising.
